What is the Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement at UIndy?

A resource center, the Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement at UIndy supports faculty and student development through service-learning and other community engagement initiatives.  The Center coordinates and offers faculty development workshops, student services that promote social responsibility and creates spaces for community connections. The primary role of the Center is to promote and support UIndy’s motto, “Education for Service,” through curricular and co-curricular experiences.

Service-learning directly relates to the course content, requiring students to learn by serving in the community, and includes reflective learning assessments and evaluation. Project-based service-learning courses are included:

Freshman Seminars or New Student Experience

  • New Student Experience Seminars (NSE)
  • 3-10 service hours
  • One-time projects addressing community needs

Service-Learning Labs

  • 28 service hours
  • Social problems, engage with organizations to learn, adapt, and help.

Mid-Level Courses (100-200)

  • 42 service hours
  • Unite students, partners, faculty in service projects

Upper-Level Courses (400+)

  • 87 service hours
  • Social objectives, problem-solving  for organizations
