Service-Learning @ UIndy

Suggested Task/Activity Calendar

Suggested Task/Activity Calendar (Depending on your course, this could be altered to meet your specific course objectives)

* Students are NOT required to perform service-learning activities During Fall/Spring Breaks and any other UIndy Holidays. It is their choice to decide to do so upon approval of their faculty/instructor.

Semester Week Task/Activity
1

Promote the service-learning lab

The Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement offers in class presentations or virtual tools to support your recruitment efforts.

Encourage Students to attend the upcoming UIndy Community Partner Days (events where nonprofit partners are on campus recruiting students for their service-learning experiences. The days will be announced via campus-wide email announcements prior to the start of the semester).

* Be sure students know they must take it now and it fulfills the Experienting Cultural Differences GenEd for just 1 credit. Students must enroll this week.
2

Meet with all students enrolled in the course to discuss selecting the most suitable agency for their experience. Continue to clarify what service- learning is (and the difference from volunteerism) and the course objectives.

Share your student list with the Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement at cslce@uindy.edu

Talk to the students who are registered for the lab and go over the syllabus. Make sure to explain clearly your expectations and requirements. Also highlight that they will be highly encouraged (or required) to participate at UIndy’s semi-annual Service-Learning Expo events that are typically held the week before finals. Their participation can be a great item for their resumes!

*Do NOT FORGET the Service-Learning Forms (you can select which ones you would like to use), HoundsConnect information for service hours reporting, and reflective practices (such as journaling).
3

Students contact agencies and start identifying potential projects. If students do not know which agencies to contact, they should first meet with you to narrow down their interests and then schedule an appointment with the CSL to discuss local options.

4

Students finalize their project and present it to their faculty.

  • please email the Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement (cslce@uindy.edu) to inform them of all the students and projects. The center ensures that all projects are listed in the HoundsConnect online system for the students to report back their SL hours.
